Peace initiatives worth knowing
Peace work rarely happens in the news cycle. Most of it is built in small rooms, over years, by people without cameras present. Here are the categories of work we cover.
Mediation and quiet diplomacy
Organizations like the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, the Crisis Management Initiative and the Sant'Egidio Community have facilitated dozens of ceasefire talks and reconciliation processes — often without ever appearing publicly. Their model: build long-term trust with all sides, then offer a discreet channel when negotiation becomes possible.
Local peacebuilding
From inter-community dialogue in Northern Ireland to traditional reconciliation councils in Somalia, the most resilient peace agreements are built bottom-up. We follow programs in 30+ countries that train local mediators rather than imposing external frameworks.
Veterans and dialogue
Combatants for Peace (Israeli-Palestinian), former IRA and UVF reconcilers in Belfast, FARC ex-combatant reintegration in Colombia — programs that bring former adversaries into the same room have one of the strongest measurable impacts on long-term stability.
Education for peace
UNESCO programs, the Peace Education Network, and curricula like those of the Frank Examiner Foundation embed conflict-resolution skills in schools. Long-term, these may matter more than any treaty.
